The New Gonzo Manifesto
Journalism was never meant to be safe.
The world is too strange, too complex and too human to observe from behind glass. The only honest way to report on it is to step inside the story.
The New Gonzo Journal exists for writers and readers who believe that lived experience, curiosity and courage are still the most powerful tools a journalist can carry.
These are field notes from the frontier
About The New Gonzo Journal
The New Gonzo Journal is an independent publication founded by freelance journalist Dr. Strat P. Koutsoumanis.
Its mission is simple: to explore what it means to be human in the strange systems of the modern world.
Drawing inspiration from the immersive tradition of writers such as Hunter S. Thompson, Tom Wolfe, Truman Capote, Norman Mailer and Michael Herr, the Journal embraces first-person journalism — writing that places the author inside the story rather than observing safely from the sidelines.
The project began unexpectedly in the summer of 2024.
After breaking his leg in a mosh pit at a heavy metal gig, Dr. Koutsoumanis was forced into several weeks of surgery, recovery and stillness — a rare condition for a man who had spent much of his life moving between professions, continents and cultures.
Somewhere between the painkillers and the long hours of recovery, an old love resurfaced: writing.
What began as a return to the journalism he admired soon became something more.
Over the years, Koutsoumanis has lived many lives — including operational tours with the British Army, a career in corporate leadership, years immersed in the UK music scene as a guitarist, DJ and drum-and-bass producer, and the deeply personal journey of navigating IVF and fatherhood.
These experiences form the raw material of The New Gonzo Journal.
Here you will find essays, reportage, memoir and cultural analysis exploring the strange landscapes of modern life — from technology and media to personal experience and the fragile connections that bind us together.
The long-term vision is to grow The New Gonzo Journal into a platform for other writers who believe, as many before them have, that the pen remains mightier than the sword.
For now, this is where the journey begins.
